Wintering in Marbella, or living here?
A few months each winter, then a few more. At what point does a Marbella owner become a resident, and what changes on paper when that happens?
Many who end up living in Marbella never decided to move. They bought an apartment for the winters, stayed through the spring one year, then kept the summer as well. Their paperwork, meanwhile, still describes a visitor.
For a second-home owner, the NIE is the whole of it: the number on the deed, on the bank account and on the utility contracts. Residence is another matter. It describes where your life is based, and Spain records it differently according to your passport.
Europeans become residents through the EU registration certificate, requested on form EX-18 at a police office once they live in Marbella. Others need a permit first, applied for at a consulate before the move, and then the card after arrival; for those who will not work, the usual route is non-lucrative residence.
The empadronamiento at the town hall often comes first, since it records the address. It is worth knowing that, according to the town hall’s portal for foreign residents, the padrón alone does not make anyone a tax resident.
When the change concerns the whole household, with schools, removals and housing to arrange at the same time, planning the move with AnchorLess can take that wider layer off your hands. The registrations themselves are ours to prepare.
