Requesting your NIE from abroad, through a Spanish consulate
Non-residents can request the NIE at the Spanish consulate of the country where they live. For buyers who have found the property but cannot yet fly out, it takes the number off the critical path.

Buyers abroad with a reservation already signed, owners who need a number for a company or an inheritance, a partner who joins a purchase late. If you will be in Marbella for viewings anyway, an appointment from the cita previa calendar there may be just as quick.
If no consulate date suits you either, it is possible to start the NIE remotely with Gestoraz, which handles the request from a distance.
What consulates usually ask for
- Form EX-15
- Your passport, with copies
- The reason for the request, documented
- The fee, settled by whatever method that consulate prescribes
- A date, booked through the consulate’s own calendar
Afterwards
The consulate forwards the request to Spain and the number comes back through the consulate. Keep the certificate with your purchase papers: in the order of a Marbella purchase, the bank and the notary both ask for it.
In Marbella
Once the consulate has assigned your number, the rest of the purchase happens in Marbella: the bank account, the notary and, later, the utilities and the town hall. If your plans change and you can travel after all, the request can move to an appointment at the Comisaría on Avenida Arias de Velasco.

Is a consulate NIE any different from one issued in Marbella?
No. It is the same number, held in the same register, and it is yours for life.
Can someone in Spain apply on my behalf?
Requests through a representative are possible in some cases, with a power of attorney. We look at whether that works for your situation before you sign anything.
