The EU registration certificate, for Europeans who settle in Marbella

Europeans who make Marbella their home register with the Policía Nacional: form EX-18, the paid 790-012 fee and a cita previa at a police office of the province lead to the certificado de registro, a green certificate stating your address and your NIE. A European passport spares you a visa, not this step, and a number you were given for a purchase carries over.

Who should register

Registration concerns EU, EEA and Swiss citizens who live in Spain rather than visit it: those who have moved into the apartment they bought, who work for a Spanish employer or for themselves, or who have retired here. A buyer who comes for a few weeks each season and keeps a home elsewhere usually needs the NIE alone.

Each adult registers in their own name. A couple moving together books two procedures, even when they bring one shared set of property papers.

What the file contains

  • The EX-18 form, filled in and signed by you
  • Your passport or identity card, and a photocopy of it
  • The Modelo 790, código 012 fee, paid before the appointment
  • Evidence of your situation: an employment contract, your registration as self-employed, or proof of sufficient means and health cover if you will not work
  • Your certificado de empadronamiento from the town hall, which offices frequently ask to see

The appointment in Marbella

Registration happens at a police office, on a slot from the cita previa calendar. In Marbella, the Comisaría on Avenida Arias de Velasco lists the régimen comunitario among its procedures for foreigners, and so do the stations of Estepona and Fuengirola. Bring every original with its copy. In many offices the certificate is printed at the end of the appointment; where it is not, the officer explains how it will reach you.

In Marbella

In Marbella, EU registration appears among the procedures of the Comisaría at Avenida Arias de Velasco 25, and its slots are released through the national booking site under the province of Málaga. We help you assemble the EX-18 file, the certificate of your empadronamiento and the fee, and tell you which nearby station shows the earliest date.

Questions

Is the green certificate the same thing as a NIE?

It contains your NIE, and it does more: it records you as an EU resident at an address in Spain. A NIE certificate obtained for a purchase says nothing about where you live.

I spend the winters in Marbella. Should I register?

Usually not, while home remains another country and Marbella is a season: the NIE is generally enough. Registration is meant for people whose life is based in Spain, and it follows once Marbella becomes home.

Does my spouse need a certificate of their own?

If your spouse also holds an EU, EEA or Swiss passport, yes, in their own name. A spouse from outside the EU takes another path: the EX-19 card for relatives of Union citizens.
